equal justice initiative
The Equal Justice Initiative is a non-profit organization located in Montgomery, Alabama. EJI challenges poverty and racial injustice, and advocates for equal treatment in the criminal justice system.
For several years I helped them define their visual identity, and supported with them with print projects. My first was the design of their 2016 annual report, which was printed and distributed to 15,000 supporters and donors worldwide.
Prior to my working with EJI, the organization had no brand or visual guidelines. Although they were very well recognized and respected for their work in criminal justice, I noticed that their widely distributed print material did not adequately reflect the incredible work they were doing. I approached the organization to offer my design service, which turned into multiple print projects over several years.
When establishing the look-and-feel for EJI’s print material, it was important to me that I capture the seriousness and importance of the subjectmatter without making the material overly dark or morose. My solution was to combine a soft color palette with a library of minimal design elements, allowing the powerful photography to remain the primary focus of their pieces.
